Engine Covers
[rant]
am i the only one that is tired of the plastic engine covers? what is their perpuse? have we lost the skill of making a good looking engine or the quality of work has gone so bad that we need to spend money on extra bits to cover it up?
i have spent some time tonight looking over a few korean "maybes" for the family line of our Js, there are plenty in line up.... but all the motors are covered by the damn ugly ass (to me anyway, nothing hotter then clean manifold and the clear view of the runners) covers?
is it really that bad that even the thermal flows of the motor are sacrificed for the looks (and the extra cash and time to take off/put on of these covers)?
is there something wrong with me doctor if i find this:
sexier and more appealing then this plastic heaven:
that looks so un-invinting, so 'sucked out of life'..... almost playground-esk...... a really boring lego????
[/rant]
ggrrrrr

Re: Engine Covers
it keeps it clean and tidy, aswell as stops lots of dirt and dust in getting there:)i would keep em there.yeah none of our cars came with covers, but they made it look presentable, to me that kia looks like a total mess with no covers

Re: Engine Covers
i hate covers, i have seen a commodore without covers that been through hell and back and motor was dusty but clean, then saw a commodore that lived its life in the city and had always had covers.... once covers were off it was HORRID... my spare engine does not look as bad as that one did and it spend 20 years in a carpot
i don't know, guess because i don't mind getting my hands dirty and i love the look of the mess (always disliked the hidden wiring in hot rods).... but for the average person i guess 'out of sight out of mind'
i would hate to track down a small oil/coolant leak with the covers on... i would take them off once and be done with it

why hide? would you hide this?
or this?
or this? even through needs a clean
This?
i don't know, guess i started my life as a lover of muscle cars ('69 Boss 429, 67/68/69 camaro, 72-78 trans am, 87-92 camaro)...... the motors were out and proud... shrug, now they are considered something ugly that requires to be hidden from the owners eyes....
having said that i just visited a mate who has lan evo VII (he can drive it too) but he opened the bonnet only twice.... and once he actually achieved anything, rest goes to service.... guess this is the way it goes, gone are the car enthusiasts that can feel their nuts (pun intended)

Engine Covers
I think the Rx-8 was a bad example. It's ugly with the cover and without haha. The alternator keeps catching my eye first.
I have a '99 BMW 540 and the way they covered the engine up made it look nice. My cousin had an Audi S8 and the cover was ugly. Something about opening a hood (bonnet for you guys I guess ) and seeing one big plastic piece, yuck.
